Altcoin / Alt-coin

Short for alternative coin, an altcoin refers to any cryptocurrency other than bitcoin.

Bear / Bear Market

This stock market term refers to a market where prices are falling.

BTD

Abbreviation for Buy The Dip. A phrase encouraging investors to take advantage of a price decline or dip and buy into the market.

Bull / Bull Market

This stock market term refers to a market where prices are increasing.

Dump

  1. The act of selling your coins.
  2. Falling price.

DYOR

Abbreviation for Do Your Own Research.

FOMO

Abbreviation for Fear Of Missing Out. A common mistake in the crypto investing scene wherein an investor buys into the market as a coin increases in value for fear of missing out on the potential gains if the coin were to continue increasing.

Fork

The act of splitting a blockchain into a fork creating a new blockchain.

FUD

Abbreviation for Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. This refers to the state of mind/panic during a period of negative press and bear markets.

HODL

A typographical error turned crypto term. This refers to the act of holding on to coins amid the urge and pressures to sell.

ICO

Abbreviation for Initial Coin Offering. This is the crypto version of an initial public offering or IPO. This refers to the first sale of tokens companies use to raise capital.

Moon

Expected skyrocketing of price to the moon.
