Reddit is known to be one of the most active social media platforms for crypto supporters. The website itself, however, has stopped its support for the so called “father” of all cryptocurrency, bitcoin. The website has disabled the bitcoin payment option as a payment for its Reddit Gold program.
A website administrator attributed the drop to the discontinuing of Coinbase’s merchant tool product and bugs in the bitcoin payment option:
“Yup that’s right. The upcoming Coinbase change, combined with some bugs around the Bitcoin payment option that were affecting purchases for certain users, led us to remove Bitcoin as a payment option.”
The Reddit Gold program is the website’s $30/year premium membership. It allowed users to disable ads, access a private subreddit, and customize their avatar. Reddit’s bitcoin payment option for this perk had been active since 2013.
When asked about the re-enabling of the feature, the same website administrator said:
“We’re going to take a look at demand and watch the progression of Coinbase Commerce before making a decision on whether to reenable.”
